Portugal's fairytale town on the edge of Europe
Close from Lisbon, just some 30 kms away, the place feels completely different. Lush forests on the surrounding hills and incredibly beautiful mansions make Sintra look kind of mysterious and unreal. And so incredibly charming! Even the climate is different here! While it was warm and sunny day in Lisbon, Sintra was much colder and kind of gloomy.
It’s incredible how many amazing monuments can be found in such a small town. Every second house and mansion brings your attention with the unique details and certain beauty. On top of that there are palaces, so magnificent they take a breath away - No wonder Sintra has made it to the UNESCO World Heritage List!
Mystical Hills dotted with Fairytale Palaces and extravagant Villas |
Surrounding the palace is the mystical Pena Park, filled with a variety of trees and exotic plants from the former colonies of the Portuguese empire, ponds, fountains, and black swans. There is also a charming lodge hidden among the trees that can be visited. At the highest point is a statue of King Ferdinand looking towards his palace, and a viewpoint called "Cruz Alta" overlooking Pena Palace and surroundings.

The preety town centre of sintra
The town of Sintra is Europe’s greatest example of the whimsical and colourful Romanticism style of architecture.
For such a relatively small town, Sintra contains an abundance of historic monuments and enthralling tourist attractions. Within the town, there are more than ten national monuments, and these varied buildings range from extravagant palaces and decadent houses through to ancient ruinous castles.
The centre of Sintra is incredibly charming, with pretty cobbled streets that are lined with traditional house, shops and cafes, all centred around the Gothic styled National Palace. Sintra has so much to offer visitors, and it is no wonder that it is the most popular day trip from Lisbon.

The Beaches of sintra
Head west from Sintra town centre and follow the hills and the rolling valleys as they give way to the cliffs that flank the Atlantic shores. Within just fifteen minutes you can be on the golden sands of the western European coastline, enjoying the warm sun and refreshing waters against the scents of freshly grilled seafood.
the beaches are Atlantic beaches, so the water is not as warm as the Mediterranean ones in the Algarve - and the waves are stronger and more dangerous as well. The long Atlantic Walk passes on the cliffs over all of these beaches.

Azenhas do mar beach
a pictoresque village sitting on a cliff and natural sea water pools down at the bottom. Sometimes, depending on the tide, there is an accumulation of sand, creating a small beach on the top of the rocks. A nice restaurant, great for fishing, no lifeguards.
MAGOITO BEACH
The ideal beach for a perfect suntan...
This beach is located at the mouth of the Ribeira da Mata (Mata River) close to Magoito village, north-east of Sintra. It is a large beach, boasting golden sands and turquoise waters which are very rich in iodine. It is considered one of the most iodine-rich beaches in Europe. From the sand, dotted with numerous rocks, you can look directly south and see Cabo da Roca in the distance. Next to the beaches access ramp there is a fossil dune which has been designated as a geological monument. The so-called consolidated dune is one of the most interesting geological features on the beach. It is a coastal dune formed by the accumulation of sand resulting from the dual action of sea and wind.
After experiencing its almost unreal mixture of extravagance, fantasy, and natural beauty you will find out that you too weren't immune to the spell of this truly enchanting real life Garden of Eden. I must say Sintra is really special and it is really worth to visit.

Eça wrote that “All in Sintra is divine” and there is virtually no corner of town that is not a poem in itself.
These verses are written as the soles of visitors shoes tread the narrow, modestly paved streets, with rhymes elaborated with the innocence of those who wander aimlessly, waiting to be enchanted.
