Lisbon's old center (or the districts of
Alfama and
Bairro Alto) is mostly made up of narrow cobblestone alleys and pastel-colored houses. Many of those houses are now begging for a fresh coat of paint (unbelievably-low rent-controlled apartments mean landlords can't afford or lack the incentive for the constant maintenance), but there's a certain decadent charm in that, as you will find out, passing under their victorian lamps, wrought-iron balconies filled with flowerpots, the occasional tourists and locals breathing in the fresh air, or laundry flapping in the wind... Browsing the
shop windows, sitting at a
cafe table, enjoying the aroma of coffee, watching the world go by...

Lisboa is always a good idea...I love my city.
